Birmingham, U.K. native Wesley Joseph continues to single-handedly change the pace of the U.K. rap scene with his release of a new single and music video, “Ultramarine.” This single will come as the title track off of his upcoming project of the same name. That project will come out on June 4 of this year.
Joseph’s second release in 2021 descends the noisy Brum with focused 808 drums and future funk sounds. He continues to incorporate a suspension of disbelief within his song lyrics, a theme he floated around his earlier spring release “Thrilla.” Lonesome in emotion, I'm a convoluted hero / What a supervillain, stir the cauldron, moving how you feel, he sings, production splitting into an eerie ether, taking his ego with it.
“When I was working on my project, I created an alter-ego called Fredrick that allowed the real emotions I feel to be humanized and that pushed the limits with the fictional scenarios and worlds I could create for the songs. The lyrics were formed around a nightmare chapter of Fredrick’s life - insomnia-fueled, out of touch and tweaked-out.”
Joseph intended his accompanying self-directed music video to act as an extension of Fredrick’s story that “blurred those lines between reality and romanticist night terrors.” We follow him, fading out Hanging out the window, and fading in, in time with his hyper-realistic cinematic and audio wonder.
