Eerie synths and a panning view of whiterosemoxie in with a possessed look in desolate locations after taking an unknown substance cover the intro of “applause,” a new music video for a standout track from his March 27 album white ceilings.
As he sinks into a bathtub wearing a straight jacket, the hook starts in his classic melodic-rap style kicks in and switches to an isolated white room with a small headlight and an all black void surrounding. Following the hard bass drop is the verse where whiterosemoxie shows off his outstanding flow accompanied by his versatile vocal tones. Really honing in on his effortless and flexible sound, the simplistic lyrics suit the track perfectly. “No they can’t do what I do” the simple and true, yet memorable line of the verse flaunting his confidence as an artist that listeners can’t help but respect. The flashing lights, constantly changing dreary scenery, transitions on color schemes with overtones of a mental patient, the song and video literally and figuratively go crazy. The repetitive but mind-sticking electronic instrumental complemented by a booming bass creates an extremely dynamic track. Even though there appear to be many moving pieces, they all fit together to create a full picture that any viewer can’t resist. The video at an abstract level could be a representation of being lost in fame and crowds through various motifs and metaphors shown visually with the track as in the end, a confused whiterosemoxie morphs to being a concert stage with bright lights and a roaring crowd applauding him. Finally panning out with a fourth wall break of him staring at the camera as the instrumental fades and is only left with applause, fitting the title of the song. “applause” being one of many standout tracks from his most recent project white ceilings, whiterosemoxie creates a music video that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but lights a fire on a complex topic that many artists in the music industry have talked about, but not all listeners may fully understand.
