Nathy Peluso has proven to have had a productive and introspective quarantine so far with the release of her newest single and music video, “Buenos Aires.” The nostalgic R&B jam is carried by her powerful vocals over a smooth, funky backing track that sounds like it’s from a 90’s synth neo-soul album. This reminiscent sound matches the tone of the lyrics as she thinks back on her childhood in Buenos Aires before her life as a musician. The music video also shares this element of the past as it juxtaposes clips of her singing and smoking in quarantine with snapshots from her childhood, while maintaining the vintage film camera visual effect throughout.
The song progresses powerfully as Nathy Peluso builds one beautiful, original melody off of another while constantly returning to the hook where she states (in translation) “it’s starting to bother me that the city is getting cold.” With that said, the song is neither repetitive nor boring as the hook is manipulated and altered to fit each different melody it leads into. This song comes as a stark contrast to her past two singles “No Se Perdona” and “Business Woman,” which have racked up over five million and two million streams, respectively. While her typical delivery has been more rapping than singing, she began to introduce more soulful, melodic vocals in “No Se Perdona,” which she has explored further in “Buenos Aires.” Only time will tell if this sudden change is a temporary excursion into new territory or if she has permanently evolved from a young rapper to a well rounded musician.
