UK pop artist Griff released her new single “One Foot in Front of the Other” in preparation for her upcoming mixtape of the same name. Griff has been gaining momentum as an artist throughout 2021 after releasing her successful single “Black Hole” and winning the ‘Rising Star’ Brit Award, joining the ranks of previous winners like Adele, Sam Smith, and Florence + the Machine.
“One Foot in Front of the Other” sticks in the listener’s head with simple, dreamy beats that give Griff’s voice a chance to shine. In the chorus, harmonies between multiple voices build the energy until Griff’s vocal riffs display the confidence and optimism she approaches heartbreak with.
On her Instagram, she wrote about the single, saying, “It’s about bouncing back from any kind of heartbreak...kinda feels like walking on a tightrope, unsteady and cautious, but all you can do is put one foot in front of the other.” She captures that tension of being suspended on a tightrope with her visceral lyric writing: “I put one foot in front of the other today / I stretched my arms out wide / And it felt real strange / And then my legs they started shaking / And my hands they started quaking.”
“One Foot in Front of the Other” will appear on her upcoming mixtape, which shares a name with the single. Griff produced it herself almost entirely from her bedroom, showcasing her many talents from singing to writing to producing. “One Foot in Front of the Other” is streaming now, and fans can pre-order the mixtape on her website.
