MyKey has an incredible knack for marrying bedroom pop to his own folky lyrics. His talent is amplified by this ability to not only produce a unique quality but also to have fun making his quirky and very original art. In a recent re-release of “Was It Something I Said” featuring Cavetown, MyKey goes back and creates his own stop motion animated video thus further expanding his foundation and reach as a creator.
The song alone surfaces ancient feelings that have long passed, second thoughts blended with adolescence. It comes across as a playful melody but it is dripping with nostalgia as the speaker works through the common, everyday anxieties partnered with the uncertainties of being in a relationship. He shows that erratic behavior and 3 am calls can be a part of a cause-effect relationship, thus highlighting delays in which people have to make time to think. These gaps allow space for change and even growth. As MyKey points out, with the time created by these hesitations, we have time to go back and reflect, much like the narrator’s point of view during this piece.
The artist adds the stop motion video almost a year after the original release. Cavetown adjusts the tone slightly but the video seems to shadow original emotions brought about by the song. Its simple style with young and daring characters creates a familiar atmosphere, but with Mykey in control of the approach, we are exposed to a familiar yet distinctively different level of production as an audience. It will be interesting to see Mykey find different ways to keep having fun with his ever smooth tunes and unique artistic creations.
