If you turn on your radio to the top 40 station any time in the next few weeks, prepare to be bombarded by Conor Matthews’s newest single “Drunk” that just dropped today. It has every piece to the hit song formula, from the catchy melody of the chorus that immediately sticks in your brain, to the light, playful lyrics that don’t make you think too hard. If it weren’t for the pandemic, girls all over the country would already be dancing on tables with bud light seltzers (or whatever the most recent craze is), belting out the refrain “I’m DRUNK.” While it seems to lack a good bit of originality in the message, it is certainly a truth most of us know. It seems as if he is ”talking through [his] buzz” as much of the song is slurred together in a kind of melodic legato, stumbling back in forth between rhythms and flows like the graceful alcoholic who has definitely drank too much but somehow makes it charming. His voice sounds familiar, like you have already heard his music for years; when the song comes on the radio, you might immediately say “Oh, I’ve heard this one before.” The somewhat pop country instrumental is countered by his smooth west coast vocals to make a song that will fit into any playlist from Nashville to Los Angeles. Like it or not, “Drunk” will have you nodding your head and moving your hips before you can tell yourself to stop. Keep ears out on the radio for this tune and eyes out for more music coming soon from Conor Matthews.
