A global pandemic prevented Wallows from a potentially ground-breaking tour, but the indie-pop group’s quick climb to success continues as they drop single after single and connect with fans virtually by performing on Instagram live. Their latest single “Virtual Aerobics” first debuted during one of their live streams back in June, with the band informing viewers they’ve created several versions of the song.
The version currently on streaming platforms is unlike their pensive hit “Are You Bored Yet?,” which features another indie dream queen, Clairo. With a simple and up-beat piano intro, Wallows quickly paints two minutes of color in “Virtual Aerobics.” The song is highlighted by chimes, claps, and synths that are thrown in almost randomly, as if they’re just jamming to see what fits into the rhythm. The lyrics are also uncomplicated, sharing a simple and light-hearted description of companionship and daydreams about being the ideal person for someone.
The end of the song transitions almost perfectly into “Nobody Gets Me (Like You),” making it hard to tell whether both singles were originally one song that Wallows chopped in half as shorter tunes become more popular.
All in all, it sounds like Wallows is having fun.
