NUANCE MUSIC FRIDAY: March 18, 2022

By the Nuance Editorial Team

What’s up Nuance Family. We are back again with our fourth edition of Nuance Music Friday and boy is it a good one. Lots of new music to unpack here so strap in.

Nothing out of the mainstream particularly interests us this week. The Red Hot Chili Peppers released a groovy little number called “Poster Child,” but most of us were born after John Frusciante left the band for the first time, so we will leave that one for the Boomers or Gen Xers or what have you.

Now to the stuff we actually care about, the stuff that won’t make the cover of Rolling Stone (well, not yet), the stuff that you should get on now before your annoying friends do. So let’s get ahead of the curve.

GAYLE Releases Debut EP, a study of the human experience volume one

  • Stream a study of the human experience EP Here, watch “luv starved” official video at the top of the page, more on GAYLE here.

  • abcdefu” sat at #1 on Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and is still hanging out in the top 5

  • The 17 year old Nashville based artist sold out two shows at the Exit / In in Nashville and has upcoming tour dates across the midwest to the west coast

  • The new 6-song EP has a similar dark pop energy to the chart-topping “abcdefu,” but proves that Gayle is more than a one-hit-wonder with serious potential for the long haul.

  • “e-z” features UPSAHL and the incredible bassist and artist Blu DeTiger. Pay attention to the subtle and nuanced bass line Blu lays down.

  • This EP and this artist could take over the airwaves the same way Olivia Rodrigo did with SOUR… but we think GAYLE is better

Sasha Alex Sloan Releases Lead Single “WTF”

Sasha Alex Sloan shot by Lucy Sandler

  • Stream song here, watch music video above.

  • With the release of this single, Sasha Alex Sloan also announces that her sophomore album, I Blame the World, will hit all streaming platforms on May 13.

  • “WTF,” like so many other songs from Gen Z artists, has a relatively bleak and apathetic outlook on the world. While you might be thinking “not another sad girl indie pop song,” this is definitely not the case. Sasha Alex Sloan is painstakingly self aware and in tune with everything, so the song perfectly captures the widespread apathetic Gen Z outlook on life rather than a presenting a narcissistic self-pity party. On top of that, her cynical lyricism and otherworldly vocal talent leave you no choice but to respect the song, despite how depressed it might make you feel.

  • Sasha Alex Sloan has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry like Sam Hunt, G-Eazy, and Charlie Puth, which garnered her over 2 billion streams all time before even releasing her first album.

  • Do NOT listen to this song if you are on the verge of a depressive episode. Or do and wallow together in existential crisis.

Dreamer Boy Drops Single “Over Everything”

  • Stream the single here, watch video above.

  • Dreamer Boy’s single “Over Everything” comes as a rare, fresh taste of something wholesome and loving—which has proven hard to come by in recent times. The dream pop anthem tells a story of love and dedication, a hopeful and optimistic outlook that we don’t see often among Gen Z artists. Soak in the positivity, we could all use a little bit.

  • Dreamer Boy is a frequent collaborator with Nuance, appearing in Pilot Issue 03 and in our most recent edition of N Good Taste. Both give a great insight into the positive energy that he radiates and the Love and Nostalgia that he puts into everything in life.

  • His tour will kick off on May 31 in Toronto, then will sneak down through the midwest into the south before jumping out west for the remainder of the tour. Grab your tickets here.

gavn! Releases New Single “lift you up (someone else)”

  • Stream “lift you up (someone else” here.

  • Okay, so the optimism and happiness was short-lived. But hey, what do you expect? The light at the end of the covid tunnel turned out just to be a missile from Russia, so its not all sunshine and rainbows out here.

  • The song discusses the feelings of continuing to love someone even after a relationship ends and the pain that can bring. gavn! fittingly croons over a piano driven lo-fi instrumental that allows his reverb-drenched vocals to soar.

“lift you up (someone else)” is a song I wrote for someone always striving to be the bigger person. Often when relationships come to a bitter end, it’s tough for the person on the receiving end, and to be honest, we all want the person we love to be happy. I created this shoulder for you to lean on, a piano ballad that allows you to find comfort in who you are in your desires to love someone unconditionally despite how much it may be hurting you. This is a song you cry your eyes out to, and this is THE song that you cry to in your room at 2 am because nothing makes sense anymore.”

Bailey Bryan Teams Up with 24KGoldn for “MF”

  • Stream “MF (feat. 24kGoldn)” here, video above, more on Bailey Bryan here

  • Honestly, not much to say about this one other than it fucking slaps as hell. Like damn, I will be singing this hook under my breath for the next few weeks. Will it likely get me in serious trouble? Yes it most certainly will. Will I be able to stop myself from doing it? Absolutely not.

  • 24kGoldn has a line about “watching gemstones but I’m the one thats jaded…” Did y’all see the finale? Shit was crazy and somehow still wholesome? Not really what I expected from Danny McBride after watching Eastbound and Down, but hey, not complaining.

Submission of the Week: Quickdraw Kid with their single “Put You In Your Place”

Quickdraw Kid, a new-style indie rock band out of Nashville, released their new single “Put You In Your Place” with a B-side called “Sprained Ankle.” The band is made up of seniors at MTSU who are all music production majors. This marks just their second and third songs out, but they have already found their lane. Instrumentally, the band feels reminiscent of early 2000s pop-punk, but their lyrics and tone fit the new age revival in the indie scene. The melody line that the guitar plays underneath the vocals reminds me of Briston Maroney’s “Sinkin’”. With Graduation coming up in May, we look forward to seeing Quickdraw Kid invade the underground indie scene in Nashville.
