Meechy Darko of Flatbush Zombies has released a new single, “On God,” featuring Freddie Gibbs and A-Trak. The new single is off his long-awaited solo debut album, Gothic Luxury, which is out August 26 via Loma Vista Recordings and follows previous singles “Get Lit or Die Tryin” and “Kill Us All (K.U.A.).” “On God,” co-produced by Jay Versace and Dot Da Genius, finds Darko trading verses with the legendary lyricist Freddie Gibbs, while A-Trak adds sweeping cinematic energy to the beat.
According to a press release, “for Meechy, who is one-third of Brooklyn’s critically acclaimed hip hop group Flatbush Zombies, stepping out of his comfort zone to create this extremely personal debut was a fait accompli decided for him by external forces, after the killing of his father in early 2020 at the hands of the Miami police. Working with Dot Da Genius shook up his usual creative process resulting in an album that includes drawn-out piano intros and laid-back funk melding with dark mini symphonies. There’s a throughline of brutal honesty and catharsis that continues to find Meechy Darko among the rawest and most candid rappers in the game.”
In addition to the new single, Meechy Darko has also shared the album’s cover art and tracklist, which features Kirk Knight, VITA, Black Thought, Denzel Curry, Busta Rhymes, and the aforementioned Freddie Gibbs and A-Trak. The album is executive produced by Dot Da Genius and mixed by Neal Pogue.
On August 3, Meechy played a sold-out show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn to celebrate the album’s announcement.
