The Breakfast Club [ 1985 ] Directed by John Hughes, is a film we all know & love, a classic! About 5 complex teenagers that ended up in detention together. This unique group of individuals who would never speak to each other somehow became very close in a day & by the end of it all, they questioned if the school will ever be the same. The personality behind each specific wardrobe for each captivating character amplifies who they are & what they really represent. If you have seen the film which you've probably seen, then you can easily explain the “type” of person they are because I am pretty sure we all had classmates like this in Highschool. The film teaches us a valuable lesson of acceptance & love of everyone individually & to not judge a book by its cover.
Rebel John Bender [ Judd Nelson ], the anti-hero, the problem. He shows no respect & idolizes making the others uncomfortable. The “bad boy” you see is really only his outer shell that he shows to the world & with this attitude & mettlesome vigorous personality you can see why that would be his wardrobe. The sleeveless red flannel, denim jacket, long grey coat with black leather gloves, straight-leg pants & black boots really can scream “ I don't give a fuck about anything “ if you style it a specific way. Fashion is about how you wear it, so with that being said the same look he wore can be represented in an entirely different way if you were to style it uniquely. Therefore the same thing that screams “ IDGAF’ can also scream “ very fashionable “.
Princess Claire Standish [ Molly Ringwald ]. The luxurious, posh, most popular girl at school who thinks she does not “ belong in detention “. You can see & feel her style, personality, wealth & popularity throughout the film. The girl who’s life seems perfect but if she had to choose which parent to live with she would rather go live with her brother. Claire can come off stuck-up, rude, immature & naive but what do you expect when you are “The most popular girl”. She walks out of her Dad’s BMW in a brown leather jacket with the sleeves rolled up halfway, brown gloves to match, a white scarf, V-neck pink blouse, long skirt with matching belt, watch & knee-high boots. The personality amplifies her style.
The Outcast Ally Sheedy [ Allison Renolds ], reserved, reticent, muted girl in the back of detention who honestly was the most enthralling character to me because, in her personality for the film, I saw a numerous amount underneath the one that was shown. As the film progresses you do start to see the multiple personalities behind each character but from the beginning of the film, she was strong within her many characters. The “compulsive liar”, the artist, the mute, the humor & at the end you see the confident beauty. The eye shadow, long cardigan with an even longer skirt, scarf & tights with white socks over & sling bag. The way it is presented in the film is very against what they wanted/expected women to wear during that time so to me it's powerful & also very rakish. She pulled it off & flipped her look to then become chic & upscale.
