Watch: Lyfe Kodomo's Music Video for "Parking Lot"
By Micah Jacks
Miami artist Lyfe Kodomo brings laid-back visuals to his song “Parking Lot.” The track is a standout from his Rhythm & Bill$ (Quarantine Prelude) project released in the former part of the year in early April. Following Rhythm & Bill$ (Quarantine Prelude), the musician has since released Rhythm & Bill$ and Rhythm & Bill$ (Epilogue) in continuation of the installment. Despite roughly a decade of making music according to his SoundCloud accounts, Kodomo remains extremely underexposed with only a handful of monthly listeners on Spotify. With this said, the video for “Parking Lot” has amassed over 6.000 views with its simplified and straightforward approach in its interpretation of the tune.
The scene is set with Lyfe sitting in the front of a car while his love interest sits in the opposite backseat as he sings, “Parking lot convos, sex in the backseat of the car.” The pair proceed to entertain a distant and what some may call “millennial-esque” conversation via text message and mostly lacking direct eye contact as the lyrics disclose suggest a message saying, “GPS location, where ya at right now.” The singer continues on to channel his inner live performer and serenade his co-star using a microphone while she looks in the distance from the trunk of the car with a smoking device in hand. While singing into the mic, Kodomo says, “I’m so vulnerable, I don’t like this effect.” These words are seemingly the theme for a video that depicts the desire for a physically close affinity while facing the sentimental reality of the consequences that may come with it.
Amidst a very productive year with four full length projects already released, Lyfe Kodomo is bound to gain traction in a scene dominated by the melodic, new wave R&B rap fusion. His smooth flows and milky melodies soothe the ears while he sneaks in clever bars in every line. There is a lot to like about this kid, and someday very soon the name Lyfe Kodomo will be a household name in New Age R&B.
