Watch: Denitia Releases Music Video for "Place to Be" Directed by Emory Park
Upon her 2019 released album, Touch of the Sky, Denitia has recently uploaded a europhic visual to go hand in hand with the beautifully written track titled “Place to be.” Touch of the Sky is a masterful album that blends in various genres like electronia, dream-pop, and rock with a dash of soulful tones. It makes perfect sense that the visual would follow suit. The song, “Place to be,” is a favorite between fans and critics alike.
The project was released September 3 on her Youtube channel, and directed by Emory Park, Co-Founder of Blue Slate Films. With Blue Slate Films, Park promotes women and queer creatives to have the floor to create their own narratives they see fit. Denitia pushes the bar with this visual, as she pushes for more visibility for Black Queer artists, straying away from confromity.
The visual takes viewers on a trip to the moon with the dream haze atmospheric theme. Emory captivates Denitia at her rawest moments within the video; Denitia is shown throughout various locations that hail from her upbringing, New York, making the video feel more authentic. This cinematic piece gives viewers a sense of nostalgia, nodding to the 1999 visual release to “I Try” by vocal legend Macy Gray. This video hones in on the beauty of everyday scenery, emphasizing its message that love is everywhere.
It feels like an acid trip, but in a way that reinforces you to combat your inner feelings. “And I can’t bear to/ Let you find me out/ Find me out/ Find me out” are just some of the heartfelt lyrics poured into this video. The song itself focuses on a complex relationship that has both lovers confused on where they stand with each other, disregarding how they might’ve felt in the beginning. Between Denitita’s airy vocals, composed tones and beats with the help of that fiery guitar makes the feeling of euphoria into a reality. It shows the depth of relationships and the complexity involved when both parties are conflicted with each other.
This project is much needed in the movement of pushing Black Queer artists to the forefront. Artists like Denitia, Saucy Santana, Syd, Tinashe, and more are all examples of Black Queer identifying artists who are more than just a commodity. They are vital creatives deserving of visibility within the music industry.
