Submission Spotlight: “been some time” by Planet CeCe
Written by: Oliver Heffron
NUANCE is always looking for new artists via online Submissions, and this week we’re happy to share a true gem: “been some time” by Planet CeCe. Kicking off the summer with a dance-pop bang on her third single, the Cambridge-based electronic pop newcomer combines dreamy bedroom pop melodies with groovy piano chords and a vibrant house beat that invites the listener to dance the demons away.
Lyrically opening up about being stuck in a rut and struggling to move on from a breakup, the sadness in the vocals mesh perfectly with the energetic beat. The pulsating rhythm unwinds the constraining narrative with each kick, taking on a new meaning by the song’s end.
First Recorded as an acoustic demo with a much more bittersweet tone, Planet CeCe’s brother and producer Alex helped it in a dance-pop direction while retaining the song’s core. After realizing the original take carried more emotion on the track, they even used the original demo vocals.
Mixing 90s-inspired UK dance beats with catchy bedroom pop, Planet CeCe aims to score the soundtrack of digital-age romance at a rhythm that keeps the party moving. Since asking her older brother Alex to teach her guitar as a child, the two siblings have been making music together, culminating in Planet CeCe’s first two sibling-produced singles, “flakers” and “calling u out,” released last year.
Already picking up support from NOTION Magazine and BBC Introducing, Planet CeCe and Alex are working on a series of singles to culminate in her debut EP later this year.
