Happy Nuance Friday! September 23 might seem like just any other day on the calendar, but on this day, in 1846, astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle became the first person to find Neptune with a telescope. “Who cares?,” you say, “Anyone can use google,” you might add. Well, 176 years after that day, our brave Editorial team scoured planet Earth’s internet airwaves to offer you something much better–four unique slices of our humanity’s musical landscape. Neptune never even released a good album anyways.
Crooked Colours – TOMORROWS
Australian indie-electro trio Crooked Colours releases their Atlantic Records’ debut LP TOMORROWS–harmonizing soothing vocal tracks with a diverse arsenal of synths and club-ready rhythms, the project is a breath of fresh-air in the electronic space, featuring standout moments like the tropical escapism of “Holiday,” the aery, deep-house bassline of “Circles,” and the euphoric, lovesick chorus of “No Sleep.” The Fremantle-based group even ventures into hip/hop with “Light Year,” which features the legendary Australian MC Masked Wolf, and underground screamo-phenom Jasiah.
Crooked Colours will usher in the new album by embarking on a North American headline tour which includes stops at Music Hall Of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY, Ogden Theatre in Denver, Fonda Theater in LA, and an opening spot for Louis The Child at Red Rocks Amphitheater in October.
Ultraflex – “Melting Away”
Ultraflex drop new single “Melting Away”–the final single off their upcoming album Infinite Wellness, the Berlin-based indie-electro/synthpop duo create their magnum opus in a power ballad that weaves together a diversity of references from different genres and mediums, borrowing its chord progression from Usher’s “Climax,” its guitar stylings from Enrique Iglesias, and a first verse heavily inspired by a short story, 'The Husband Stitch' by Carmen Maria Machado, just to name a few. Combining six different versions of the hook, everything about this strong challenges structure in a way that’s unique to Ultraflex. Infinite Wellness comes out October 7 via Street Pulse Records.
LUCKI – FLAWLESS LIKE ME
LUCKI releases new album Flawless Like Me–over its 55-minute runtime, the Underground Chicago Flowmaster effortlessly demolishes 24 woozy, 808-centric instrumentals like “BEEN A MINUTE,” “13,” and “DNA,” with a standout pair of features coming from Babyface Ray on “WHITE HOUSE” and Future on “KAPITOL DENIM.”
22 Gz – “Max Out (feat. Shawny Binladen)”
Brooklyn drill pioneer 22Gz shares new single “Max Out” featuring Queens MC Shawny Binladen–coming off the heels of recent hit singles “WHY WOULD I LACK (FEAT. SPMB BILLS),” “Up N Stuck (Feat. Kodak Black)” and the release of The Blixky Tape 2, The Year of The Blixky keeps rolling on.
