3X Grammy Award winner Lizzo dropped the single “Grrrls” off her new album SPECIAL, set to release on July 15. This single follows the viral sensation “About Damn Time,” which garnered over 3.5 million streams on TikTok alone.

This funk-pop track is a light-hearted, upbeat song about embracing and celebrating every aspect of femininity. With lyrics like, “I’m about to knock somebody out” and defending a friend with “I’ma go Lorena Bobbitt on him,” we see her infusing lines that are not soft or delicate amongst her empowering mantra for girls. She’s empowering women’s rights, and women’s wrongs–it is a fresh take on summer songs about feminine connection and friendship.

Her celebration of girls, in the end, became one of change and inclusivity. After public outcry regarding an ableist word being used in the song, Lizzo immediately re-recorded and re-released the song, taking the feedback seriously and acting accordingly.

Lizzo’s album SPECIAL is available for pre-save and the dates have already been released for her summer SPECIAL tour.
