Dangerous Artist of the Week: Joe Trufant
Joe Trufant’s voice is what Drake is trying to sound like. Hailing from Brevard, North Carolina, Trufant established himself within the blossoming late-night R&B-trap scene in 2015 with his debut EP Fall Through, which revealed his talent for creating and finding soothing melodic pockets within dark atmospheres.
5 years later Joe Trufant, the Ty Dolla Sign-signed crooner, flexes his mastery of the moody-trap sciences in his latest EP Fall Through 2: 15 minutes of well-crafted mood-music that perfectly accompanies those 3 AM drives home across town. “Backseat” best exemplifies the sound: a gentle bed of reverb, muted melodies, and an understated MPA-groove which Trufant effortlessly floats over creating a melody that will stick in your head till you wake up with the song still playing. Trufant’s voice combines beautifully with “Gin & Tonic’s” slow-bounce and mesmerizing synths. On “She”, Trufant flexes his range, oscillating seamlessly from high to low over a thumping instrumental. Fall Through 2 shows Trufant making good on the promise that got him recognized, mastering the craft of creating beautiful trap-lullabies that fit perfectly into any late-night playlist, and earns his spot as Dangerous Artist of the Week.
