Dangerous Artist Of The Week: Atlanta's Grandma

Written By Brendan Hayes

In his new two-song single set titled “Everybody’s On Their Phone,” Atlanta based GRANDMA blends several moods and genres into one cohesive piece. The April 30th release builds from his debut album Even If We Don’t Get It Together, which displays his unique mixture of synth-pop, hip-hop, and the vibe of the 80’s.

The self-titled first song on the tape feels like a modern ballad. The dreamy keys carry GRANDMA's resonating voice towards a beautiful chorus, reminiscent of 2011 Childish Gambino. An unusual outro then leads into a very contrasting vibe on the second track, as the song opens up with a synth chord progression and drums straight out of an 80s discotheque. The song gets its underlying groove from a thick bassline, but the power and the punch come from the chorus: "What else are we supposed to do? / She said stay in said cause ‘People are dead on the news.’” The two tracks are relevant and unconventional, with rich new sounds that resonate with modern times.
